Two 18-Card Vowel Packs

The 18-card packs are sold in sets of two. The vowel spellings — representing each of the eighteen sounds — are written on the cards. Each spelling is also written in very small letters on the upper left-hand corner of the card so that it can be easily oriented.

The instructor first goes through the card pack with the student. The timing pack, held by the student, is constructed from the sound/spellings correspondences that are secure. When timed, the student goes through the pack, quickly saying the sound of each card and placing it face-up on the table. The rate is found by dividing the number of cards in the timing pack by the time taken in minutes. Three such timings should be completed and recorded.
